Internet - Boon or Bane

Internet is the abbreviated form of international networking. Internet plays a crucial role in today's fast-paced life. For instance, can we think of a life without this global information system? It has shrunken the entire world with its effective instant messaging, e-mails, chats, etc. In addition, gathering information on any particular topic has become so simple with the advent of internet. The present scenario is that 'internet' means 'everything' from doing a complex assignment in which a person has absolutely no knowledge to cracking a tricky problem in mathematics or even hunting jobs. If internet were going to be only good then this question of it being a boon or a bane would not have arised. That means there is something else in it that has led to this debating. Let us find out what those are, apart from analyzing the boon part of it.

There are many valid points to state that internet is a boon to mankind. Its widespread uses are inexpensive communication over a very long distance, its ability to provide information on any topic just with the click of a mouse, listening to one's favourite songs, learning to cook a dish that is famous in one remote corner of the world, booking rail or air tickets, online banking, online share trading, online learning through computer-based tutorials (CBTs) and web-based tutorials (WBTs) etc. The list just goes on.The only primary requisite to work over internet is that the computer system must be inter-connected with the other systems following a common protocol. This is called networking. In this way, network users are facilitated to use the world wide web to search for and find the needed information or share files, and other resources.

In addition to the above said uses it has also carved its identity in fields like online shopping where one can view the different items available and select his/her favourite ones just by sitting at home at ones own convenient time. Finding a life partner though the web has proved to be a boon to a number of people. To do so, both the girl and the boy post their profiles on to the respective sites and at the same time view others profiles. If there is mutual consent, then they proceed to go in for the marriage.

Internet has brought about a revolution in almost all the fields. It has been serving as a part and parcel of our society at large. But, as we all know, there is always two sides to a coin. Therefore, internet too has its disadvantages, which makes it a bane to the humankind. Although communication has become cost-effective and worthy, chatting with unknown persons and revealing to them, all the information about us, tends to be risky. And, we have been made aware of such cheatings through mass media. In fact, many youngsters have lost their lives, for, their 'so-called' friends, they made through the internet, have cheated them.

So, the conclusion is that no invention of science, by itself, is a boon or a bane. It is in our hands to use it in the most appropriate way to derive the best out of the networking system.
