Internet plays a crucial role in today's fast-paced life. For instance, can we think of a life without this global information system? It has shrunken the entire world with its effective instant messaging, e-mails, chats, etc. In addition, gathering information on any particular topic has become so simple with the advent of internet. The present scenario is that 'internet' means 'everything' from doing a complex assignment in which a person has absolutely no knowledge to cracking a tricky problem in mathematics or even hunting jobs. If internet were going to be only good then this question of it being a boon or a bane would not have arised. That means there is something else in it that has led to this debating. Let us find out what those are, apart from analyzing the boon part of it.

There are many valid points to state that internet is a boon to mankind. Its widespread uses are inexpensive communication over a very long distance, its ability to provide information on any topic just with the click of a mouse, listening to one's favourite songs, learning to cook a dish that is famous in one remote corner of the world, booking rail or air tickets, online banking, online share trading, online learning through computer-based tutorials (CBTs) and web-based tutorials (WBTs) etc. The list just goes on.The only primary requisite to work over internet is that the computer system must be inter-connected with the other systems following a common protocol. This is called networking. In this way, network users are facilitated to use the world wide web to search for and find the needed information or share files, and other resources.

In addition to the above said uses it has also carved its identity in fields like online shopping where one can view the different items available and select his/her favourite ones just by sitting at home at ones own convenient time. Finding a life partner though the web has proved to be a boon to a number of people. To do so, both the girl and the boy post their profiles on to the respective sites and at the same time view others profiles. If there is mutual consent, then they proceed to go in for the marriage.

Internet has brought about a revolution in almost all the fields. It has been serving as a part and parcel of our society at large. But, as we all know, there is always two sides to a coin. Therefore, internet too has its disadvantages, which makes it a bane to the humankind. Although communication has become cost-effective and worthy, chatting with unknown persons and revealing to them, all the information about us, tends to be risky. And, we have been made aware of such cheatings through mass media. In fact, many youngsters have lost their lives, for, their 'so-called' friends, they made through the internet, have cheated them.

So, the conclusion is that no invention of science, by itself, is a boon or a bane. It is in our hands to use it in the most appropriate way to derive the best out of the networking system.

'Visual Rank' From Google

In International World Web Meeting 'Big G' has revealed a progressive image ranking technology "Visual Rank" for ranking similar images. Visual Rank is located as Page Rank for images. Google's Page Rank assists to decide a site's value, based on content and range from 0-10. The higher the Page Rank, the higher the site appears in natural search listings for connected keywords. Nowadays image search largely relies on scrutinizing the text near the image, the image's file name and the words in ALT text linked among them. Image scrutinizes remains a mostly vague problem. To find that which images are similar with each other they have software called 'Image Recognition'. After which it estimates the "Visual Hyperlinks" between them to generate a final ranking. They are going to incorporate all the substances that are happening in computer apparition and place them in a Web framework. For developing the Visual Rank researchers are focusing on most popular product questions on Google, including IPod, Xbox and Zune. Google's vice president for search products Marissa Mayer, who will be visiting Australia for the Search Marketing Expo in Sydney, said that the company had changed significantly since she became the company's 20th employee in the year 1999. "It was very messy. They couldn't even afford a cleaning crew," she said. "There were computer parts all over the office. We even printed our own business cards."

Today, Google employs more than 16,900 people in 28 countries. While most people think Google's conquest is due to its search technology, its financial success has come from online advertising. But before it could attract advertisers, it had to attract as many users. "A lot of people didn't think that search was something which mattered deeply," Ms Mayer said.
